Not-Quite-a-GamerGirl: Hollow Knight

Welcome friends, to the very first DexyDoesThings Twitch Game Highlight, featuring Hollow Knight! Too long of a title? Imma have to workshop that. 😅

What is DexyDoesThings?

DexyDoesThings is my Twitch channel! Wait, pause, I’m doing Twitch now too?? Yupp. 😂

Ya’ll know I try to be a busy (and resourceful) bee, so when Omicron rocked NYC and rattled the nightlife industry once again, I had to devise a new game plan. While I had a bit more free time, my partner and I set up a Twitch account so that we could stream at home and quickly started making new friends!

Ok sure, and what’s Twitch??

Sort of like Youtube, but you can watch streamers in real time doing things like gaming, making music, crafting, cooking, etc. This has been a really fun platform to explore these past few months, especially while I was laid up after my recent surgery. You don’t need an account to watch, but it’s free to make one if you’d like to follow me there and get access to our custom emotes! 🥳

Check out the new Twitch channel!

We’ve also recently launched a Discord server to stay better connected to our friends and community members.

Um…Discord???

Basically, it’s a big fun group chat with lots of features, specific “channels” to discuss different interests, and you can silence notifications if your friends get annoying. 😂

Not Quite a Gamer Girl 🎮

Okay, now the fun part, HOLLOW KNIGHT! Hollow Knight is a 2D metroidvania platformer created by a team of three people (Team Cherry) that chronicles the adventures of our small, heroic bug friend! It is also the first game I chose to play on stream AND highlight here, because it has been pretty impactful.

I used to be far more into gaming when I was a kid. Growing up, I was always hustling from one sports or play practice to another, and rarely had much down time in-between. On the rare weekend morning that we DIDN’T have somewhere to be, my dad, my sister, and I would be hunkered down in the playroom with some version of Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, or Singstar.

As soon as I left the house for college and “real life” started, I didn’t have space in my head for games and I didn’t miss them at all. It felt like a part of my childhood that was meant to stay there. Sure, I still loved board games and got into Kingdom Hearts with my sister on occasion, but those long mornings spent gaming were a thing of the past.

BOOM. Flash cut to pandemic season 2020. 😳

Andddd just like that, your girl was stuck indoors for the first time ever. No entertainment industry gigs, no nightlife bartending to do on the weekends, no running around with friends…there was nothing. So, I did what everyone else was doing; tried to find some joy and peace in the small moments I could, while it felt like the world was crumbling.

ENTER HOLLOW KNIGHT.

I know what you’re thinking, Devony you literally started this blog and your company during the lockdown. You read hundreds of books! You learned to juggle! You’re not going to say you just gamed throughout the last two years. 🙄

Fair and true. BUT, I did sit down at a computer for the first time since I was a kid, looking for a game to take me away from reality. Looking for something I could pass the time with and feel accomplished while doing. A safe form of escapism.

Hollow Knight was the first game I really connected to in years. Between the exploration and puzzles, the challenging boss fights and adorable characters, I was hooked for the 30+ hours it took me to conquer it. And even still, there are rocks left unturned because this game is EPIC.

When I finally returned to some semblance of “normal life,” I was reentering the world with a new fondness for games. A reminder of this piece of my life that once was so comforting, and again gave me a safe place to be when I needed it most.
